Overhead Garage Door Maintenance

At Overhead Door Fort Smith, we sell, install, and even assist in maintaining your garage doors. While our garage doors are built to last, there are a few tips and preventative measures that you can take to ensure the longevity of your garage doors. Here are some tips to help guide you in your DIY overhead garage door maintenance.

#1 Lubrication

You should periodically lubricate your garage door’s moving parts to ensure that they continue operating with ease. This includes the door opener’s chair or drive screw, hinges, rollers, and the tracks. Just a small amount of spray lubricant can prevent noise and keep your garage doors operating correctly.

#2 Tighten Hardware

Garage doors are used multiple times a day and it is possible for the hardware to become loose. Making it a routine to check the hardware every few months is always recommended so your garage door will stay in working order.

#3 Test the Balance

You can test the balance by disconnecting the opener. Open or lower the door halfway. If the door falls or rides up, the spring’s tension needs to be adjusted. You can also keep an eye on the balance by watching your door close each time you leave. If it hooks or snags, you’ll want to get it checked out by our professionals at Overhead Door.

#4 Test the Auto-Reverse Feature

At least once a year, you’ll want to check on the auto-reverse feature to prevent accidents. Place a piece of wood or brick underneath the garage door. Once the door comes into contact with the object, it should reverse. This should be done every few months, especially if you have small children, to avoid the risk of injury.

It’s important to have a professional to assess and fix any significant amount of damage, or anything that you’re not wholly secure in fixing yourself. Contact us to have one of our professionals to handle any of your overhead garage door maintenance issues.
